Three parts
The setup includes an AI application, its MCP client and an MCP server. The server offers tools such as information retrieval. The actual information can remain in the business system.
An illustrative use case
An agent requests product availability. An MCP tool receives a product identifier, validates the call and retrieves availability through an API. Permission to read availability does not imply permission to change stock.
What MCP does not decide
MCP does not decide who owns the information or whether someone may perform an action. Authentication, permissions and target-system restrictions must be designed and tested in the implementation.
Where to start
Choose one workflow and establish its APIs and permissions. Then assess whether an agent needs MCP or a direct API integration is sufficient. A focused starting point makes the work easier to define.
