01

API: the system interface

An API defines how software reads or changes system information. A web application can use it directly when the calling application and operations are known.

02

MCP: the agent-facing connection

An MCP server describes tools and their inputs to an agent. It may use the same underlying API, but the agent workflow, permissions and tool scope need their own design.

03

Questions that guide the choice

Who calls the operation: your application or an agent client? Is there a working API? Are reads enough, or are changes required? Which clients need support? These answers shape the implementation.

04

Permissions matter in both

Data and action boundaries must be enforced on the server. A tool description or hidden interface button does not by itself implement authorization.
